Nagel-Group’s commitment to the Lean and Green initiative highlights that it is possible to reduce environmentally harmful greenhouse gas emissions like CO2 while improving efficiency in logistical processes. In the past five years, the logistics company has reduced CO2 emissions in its transport and logistics processes by more than 20 per cent per tonne of shipment weight transported. GS1 Germany is now awarding the food logistics provider the Lean and Green 1st Star. The initiative certifies and recognises ecological responsibility with a focus on warehouse and logistics processes. “Not only did our concept perform well in the audit but it also ensures that we produce fewer emissions day in, day out,” explained Peter Jockenhövel, Head of Sustainability at Nagel-Group. “The Lean and Green 1st Star is a wonderful confirmation of our commitment to resource conservation, but also an incentive to make even more improvements,” added Jockenhövel.

Set of measures ranging from the vehicle fleet to intermodal transport

Nagel-Group took various steps to reduce emissions to this extent. The continuous modernisation of the vehicle fleet made a significant contribution to the success. This process involved the full transition to Euro 6 semi-trailer tractors and the adjustment of the vehicle mix in local transport in terms of payloads and optimised route planning. Another critical success factor is the driving staff’s ongoing training in fuel-efficient and anticipatory driving by the driver and fleet team at the sites. Nagel-Group monitors its daily nationwide routes to avoid empty runs and changes ‘one-way transports’ to optimised truck-meets-truck or return transports. The action plan also includes switching the sites to LED lighting and investing in photovoltaic systems. For example, the company recently brought into service the largest roof-mounted photovoltaic system in the Ruhr area at the Bochum branch.

“We warmly congratulate Nagel-Group on this remarkable success. We are delighted to efficiently advance sustainability and environmental protection in logistics with every award – whether with the Lean and Green Award, 1st or 2nd Star,” said Oliver Püthe, responsible for Lean and Green at GS1 Germany, in congratulation.

The 1st Star becomes the second recognition Nagel-Group has earned for its commitment to sustainability. In 2016, the company received the Lean and Green Award for its action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
