B+S takes over packaging and distribution logistics for SugarGang XXL Advent calendars

When an idea becomes a successful concept: in recent years, the young Dortmund-based company SugarGang has developed from a supplier of international sweets into a real trendsetter in the field of Advent calendars. This year, the company is relying on the logistics expertise of B+S Logistik for the first time, benefiting from smooth processes.

From mystery box to cult product

What began with the import and sale of rare sweets from all over the world quickly developed into an integral part of the Christmas business. SugarGang’s XXL Advent calendar, filled with branded products and specially created items, is now the centrepiece of the range. It is sold exclusively online through the company’s own shop and Amazon, while a mini Advent calendar is also available in retail stores.

Demand is growing rapidly: from around 10,000 calendars in the early years to 35,000 last year and 60,000 in the current season – growth that places high demands on logistics.

Complexity meets expertise

‘The increasing quantities, complex packaging and high quality requirements have shown us that we need an experienced partner,’ explains Adrian Balbegi, founder and managing director of SugarGang. ‘In B+S Logistik, we have found a service provider that combines reliability, flexibility and strong expertise in the food segment.’

All individual components are delivered to the Bielefeld site, some by lorry, but most in sea containers. The calendars are then assembled, stored and shipped to end customers. A particular highlight is the option of having calendars measuring over a metre in size shrink-wrapped directly – a plus point for product protection and quality.

Efficiency at every step

Production of the calendars begins in September, as soon as all items have arrived. Employees are involved in cardboard assembly, filling, foiling, labelling and palletising. Around 2,000 calendars are produced and shipped every day.

‘The geographical proximity between Dortmund and Bielefeld is a real advantage for us,’ emphasises Balbegi. ‘We can coordinate at short notice, adapt processes and always maintain control over quality and schedule.’

A partnership that grows

Thomas Finke, Head of E-Commerce at B+S, also draws a positive conclusion: ‘The collaboration with SugarGang shows how much potential there is in partnership-based solutions. We contribute our logistical strength, thereby creating the basis for SugarGang to concentrate fully on product development and marketing.’

Thanks to optimised packaging, sturdy boxes and careful handling, the return rate is minimal. This ensures that the sweet surprises arrive safely at customers’ homes – just in time for Advent.
