Book & Claim at the Nagel-Group

The logistics industry is under more pressure than ever: a steadily increasing demand for goods meets ambitious climate goals and growing regulatory requirements. For many companies, it has become a strategic necessity to make their supply chains not only efficient but also sustainable.

A key lever for greater sustainability in the supply chain is transparent and certified emissions management. For the Nagel-Group, this is not a new field but has been a core part of our sustainability strategy for years. We consistently measure, optimize, and reduce our CO₂ emissions. Now, we are reaching a new milestone by making our progress usable for our customers. With Book & Claim, we are introducing a solution for decarbonizing transport emissions within our network. Without interfering with existing logistics processes, we are creating a flexible, scalable, and certified solution to decarbonize your supply chains.

“Our goal is not only to make progress in emissions management ourselves but also to pass these benefits directly on to our customers. By using the Book & Claim module from Shipzero, we are creating a transparent and certified solution that enables us to do just that,” says Hendrik Krukow, Executive Director Sales & Marketing at the Nagel-Group.

Why new solutions are necessary

The logistics industry faces complex challenges: on the one hand, global demand for goods continues to grow. On the other hand, emissions must be drastically reduced to meet climate targets. Especially in the food sector, where supply chains are complex and layered, Scope 3 emissions make up a significant portion of the CO₂ footprint.

Although the Nagel-Group already uses alternative fuels such as HVO and electric trucks, we – like the entire industry – encounter structural limitations: regional availability is not yet widespread, charging infrastructure is still being developed, and the costs of low-emission technologies remain high. At the same time, regulatory requirements for transparency and concrete CO₂ reduction measures are increasing. That’s why it’s even more important for us to develop innovative solutions that address these challenges and offer our customers practical paths to decarbonization today.

Book & Claim: Decarbonization without process changes

Our customers can improve their CO₂ balance without any operational changes. The solution is flexible, scalable, and certified. It allows sustainable transport to be “booked” where it makes logistical and economic sense, and the resulting CO₂ savings to be “claimed” elsewhere in the supply chain.

A real-world example: A customer with shipments from Munich wants to reduce their CO₂ footprint. However, no alternative drive systems or fuels are currently available locally. Within the Nagel transport network, HVO fuels and electric trucks are already in use at other locations, but the customer currently has no shipment volumes there. Through the Book & Claim model, they can still apply the sustainable attributes of HVO 100 or electric trucks to their location and improve their CO₂ balance—regardless of where the fuel or vehicle is actually used.

Shipzero: Transparency, validation, and reporting from a single source

Since 2022, the Nagel-Group has partnered with Shipzero as a decarbonization partner. The platform ensures that all emissions data is recorded, verified, and assigned according to ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework of the Smart Freight Centre. It enables shipment-specific CO₂ accounting and provides certified emission credits that can be directly integrated into our customers’ sustainability reporting.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • Reduced CO₂ balance without operational changes
  • Promotion of sustainable supply chains through active demand for alternative drives
  • Transparent sustainability documentation (emissions data recorded according to ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework of the Smart Freight Centre)
  • High flexibility and scalability
