Intermodal traffic - rail transport through Europe
No traffic jams, no driver shortages and low environmental impact at the same time: Rail transport is sustainable and economical. The Nagel-Group offers customers the right solutions for cutting edge, combined transport for the fast-paced world of food logistics as well.
We provide both: Full truck load and groupage freight services
Intermodal traffic is a perfect addition to our services. We are oriented to the needs of our customers and provide full truck load and groupage freight shipments by train as well. The Nagel-Group offers regular departure times in many European countries. Terminals for combined transport can be conveniently reached from many Nagel-Group branches. This way, road and rail transport can be perfectly coordinated.
Benefits of intermodal traffic by the Nagel-Group
- High loading capacity - up to 26 tonnes per trailer
- Lower transport costs per pallet
- Environmentally friendly due to reduced CO2 emissions
- Continuous temperature monitoring for high quality standards
- Short access routes - our branches are often in close proximity to train terminals
- Extensive experience with intermodal shipments in our unique Europe-wide network
From the semi-trailer to the train
The Nagel-Group offers both: Piggyback trailers that have been specifically designed for loading onto the rails, and even a solution for non-craneble trailers. As yet, the vast majority of truck trailers in Europe cannot be lifted with a cargo handling apparatus and placed on a train. This launches the NiKRASA system, which was developed with the support of the Nagel-Group. NiKRASA’s greatest strength: No changes to the semi-trailer, the railway carriage or the handling equipment are required.
How the NiKRASA system works
The NiKRASA system consists of two parts: a terminal platform that can be driven on and the transportation platform. The transportation and terminal platforms fit together exactly. The terminal tractor drives onto the terminal platform and positions the standard trailer in the middle of the transportation platform. Then it is the grappler’s turn. It grasps the trailer by the gripping edges of the transportation platform and lifts it. The trailer and transportation platform are handled as a unit. The transportation platform is transported with the railway carriage; the terminal platform remains.

Combined transport proves itself in practice
The high flexibility and easy use of the system are important foundations for the utilisation of the Nagel-Group fleet in intermodal transport. We are already successfully implementing this know-how between Denmark and Italy, and more. Bypassing all the challenges of road transport, up to four tonnes per trailer can be additionally transported.
