Confectionery – High Value Assortment, Carried Out By Hand

Task

In 2010, Nagel-Group was appointed by a large German confectionery manufacturer to take over the warehousing at two locations. This presented a special challenge, in that their business is characterised by high seasonal variations in demand, but also heavy variations in weekly quantities. This means that assortments sometimes need to be adjusted in their combination unexpectedly and at short notice. The extensive product portfolio and the characteristics of each product packaging also needed to be taken into account, without losing sight of flexibility and cost structure.

Solution

Nagel-Group made use of its longstanding experience in value added services to implement the entire warehouse process of both co-packing facilities – from receipt of raw materials, storage and packaging through to outgoing goods. The secret of the operation: less automatic and more manpowered processes means your transport can be controlled very flexibly, and enables faster reactions to variations in quantity and combination of assortment.

In addition, Nagel-Group optimised the assembly process for sales displays. Based on packing plans, the right quantity and packing arrangements are determined. The required quality is secured through spot checks of the packed goods. Finished pallets are freshly labelled and buffered.

Result

Within just 5 months, Nagel-Group mapped out a production process for the client, perfectly equipping them for seasonal handling and quantity variations in their business. The two locations and associated production are now optimally integrated into the Nagel-Group network. A great success for us and an important step for the client.
