Location Optimisation for a Cheese Manufacturer – this fresh Concept Puts You in a good Place

Task

Alongside the optimisation of its logistics, a large German cheese manufacturer and long standing transport client of the Nagel-Group examined and revised its existing location concept. The goal: to find the ideal location for warehousing and distribution by conducting a quantity and article flow analysis.

Solution

The analysis showed that the existing warehouse concept with two regional warehouses was less advantageous than using one central warehouse. The ideal location emerged in the centre of Germany – in direct proximity to one of Nagel-Group’s 27 German sites. From here, the cheese products can take the shortest and especially the fastest route to their international destinations.

For the next step, the identified site needed to be prepared for the client’s processes. After clarifying all operational requirements, Nagel-Group put together a project team. In order to be able to move the cheese manufacturer to the selected location, some technical changes had to be made to the selected warehouse. For example, part of the existing automated high-rise storage had to be stripped down to enlarge the picking area. Furthermore, technical units were replaced, stacker cranes were brought up-to-date and the entire warehouse was being equipped with cooling technology. The change of location was a welcomed opportunity to optimise the warehouse processes, while 30 employees had to be introduced to the new procedures.

Result

The project was executed under challenging conditions – warehouse remodelling took place with day-to-day business in full swing. The new site had to start operation without interference to the existing productivity. The new location and the significantly leaner warehouse processes promise long-term competition advantages for the cheese manufacturer.
